The 10 Expensive Private Islands

A private island is a privately owned island. Privately owned islands exist all over the world, and many can be bought. There are many thousands of uninhabited islands in the world with potential for commercial development of tourist resorts or private recreational use. Commercial development of uninhabited islands can bring up ecological concerns, as many have a fragile environment. Some islands can be bought undeveloped, while other include roads and/or houses. Some celebrities like Diana Ross, Tony Curtis and Claudia Schiffer own their own private islands. Many cruise lines own private islands, such as Disney’s Castaway Cay, which serve as exclusive ports of call for their ships. 1 ) Isla de sa Ferradura ($39,700,000 USD)

Cabbage Cay is a 35-acre private island located in the inner bay, just off North Eleuthera and Harbour Island. Eleuthera lies about 60 miles east of Nassau and about 200 miles from Florida. Cabbage Cay is just a few minutes west of Harbour Island, and less than two miles north of the North Eleuthera airport. This uninhabited, privately owned island is located off the east coast of Baja in the Sea of Cortez. It is approximately 60 miles east of the city of La Paz.  Cerralvo is located in the northeastern region of Nuevo León, in the region of the coastal plain of the gulf and in the cattle raiser-agricultural, northeastern economic zone that is formed besides by the municipalities of Agualeguas, General Treviño, and Ocampo.

4 ) Singer Castle on Dark Island ($2,450,000USD)

Dark Island Castle was the last of several “castles” built at the Thousand Islands during a brief interval (1888-1905). Bourne undertook the project while larger Boldt Castle was nearing completion nearby. The architect modeled the stone structure, planned in 1903, on Scottish models described in novels of Sir Walter Scott.  Following the 1919 death of Frederick Bourne, daughter Marjorie (Mrs. Alexander D. Thayer) took title to the property. Her ownership was contested by a brother, but she retained title. On her death, the Roman Catholic order Brothers of the Christian Schools, or Christian Brothers acquired Dark Island along with the large Bourne country house, Indian Neck Hall at Oakdale on Long Island, which thereafter became La Salle Military Academy.

5 ) Necker Island ($329,000USD/week)

Necker Island is a small island in the British Virgin Islands just north of Virgin Gorda. All of the land on the island is owned by Sir Richard Branson, famous for his Virgin brand, and it is part of the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio of luxury properties. Accommodations, in a stunning ten bedroom Main House and three separate Balinese houses, include sweeping ocean views. The Main House is the center of casual social activity and includes indoor and outdoor dining areas, handsome Balinese-style interiors for lounging and reading, and a games area with a full-size snooker table and the latest table games. 6 ) Musha Cay ($32,250 USD / day for 12 or fewer people.)

Musha Cay is a 150 acre, privately owned island in the Exuma Chain, in the southern Bahamas. It is located 85 miles southeast of Nassau.  Musha Cay is surrounded by three smaller islands that maintain its guests’ privacy. There can only be one group of guests, numbering up to twenty-four, at any one time. Musha Cay is owned by David Copperfield. According to Copperfield, the Fountain of Youth has been discovered there. Google co-founder Sergey Brin was married on Musha Cay in May 2007.

7 ) Tetiaroa ($47,000USD/per day.)

Located 42 km north of Tahiti (15 mn by plane), Tetiaroa is the unique atoll (low island) of the Society Islands. Its crystal-clear lagoon is circled by 13 white sand islets. Totally close to the ocean, its reef barrier does not offer a pass to enter the lagoon by boat. On one of these islets, Hotel Tetiaroa offers rustic Polynesian style bungalows made from materials found on the island and set right on the beachfront. The only sounds you will hear are the thud of a coconut falling in the forest, the cries of birds and the thunderous roar of the sea as it breaks into rainbow cascades on the coral reef surrounding the atoll.

8 ) Ciftlik Island(approximately $25,000,000 USD )

Ciftlik Island. This gorgeous island in the Aegean Sea, with a stunning castle style home and ideal location. Ciftlik Island has stunning views in every direction, as the South side faces historic Rhodes, and the West faces beautiful Ciftlik Cove’s lovely beach and ancient ruins. The island is 27km west of Marmaris, 17 miles to Rhodes, and located in the municipal region of Bayir Koyu. Just 250 metres from the mainland, the highest elevation on the island is approximately 70 metres above sea level. Approximately 1/4 of the 25-acre Ciftlik Island is available, the rest is unused and owned for preservation purposes by the Turkish government.

9 ) Piedade Island (Upon request)

Often regarded as the most luxurious and beautiful property in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a perfect travel destination for the jet set crowd, and is a wonderful place to relax, dive, or even take a forest walk..complete with small waterfalls.  The complex on the island can accommodate 22 people, and the island itself is famous for being a frequently rented location by the magazine Caras for celebrity photo shoots.
