Recently Ian Welch age 45 a British biologist broke a world record for catching a 55-stone sting ray. It was a 90 minutes battle between Ian Welch and the stingray and took 13 men to heave it out of the water. The fish was measured to be 7 feet long and 7 feet wide while its long sting measured 10 feet long!

Ian Welch is a freshwater biologist who was visiting Thailand to help with a stingray tagging programme when he found the fish on the Maeklong River. He said that he was nearly pulled over while battling against the stingray.

It was a tough pull and they manage to land the stingray and took its DNA before releasing it. The giant freshwater fish is now listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

‘I was exhausted after wards. I did very little for the rest of the day – and just had a cold beer.’  Mr Welch
