On 1st July 2009, A building, Sears Tower in Chicago, United States has opens a new feature of the SkyDeck, “The Ledgeâ€, which lets you stand on a sheet of glass 103 floors above busy Chicago streets.
Standing on a sheet of glass on 103 floors is a breathtaking experience.
From 1,353 feet above the street — that’s 103 stories up — The Ledge jets out 4.3 feet over Wacker Drive. Visitors are treated to unobstructed views of the city from the building’s west side and a heart-stopping vista of the street and Chicago River below – for those brave enough to look straight down
The same glass and architectural metal contractor, MTH industries, that installed the Cloud Gate in Millennium Park, put in The Ledge’s 1,500 pound glass panels. The glass is three layers thick and each layer is a half-inch thick. Each box is designed to hold about five tons.
The popular deck attracts 25,000 visitors on clear days. They each pay $15 to take an elevator ride up to the 103rd floor of the 110-story office building that opened in 1973.
It was announced on March 12, 2009 that Chicago’s beloved icon the Sears Tower will be officially going by a different name by the end of the year. London-based Willis Holdings Group will be taking over the naming rights shortly and will be calling the building the Willis Tower.
